MY ROLE
Modelling, validation & interoperability

A shared language for observations

The IOTC Regional Observer Scheme brings together data that must be described, checked and exchanged consistently. Modernisation concerns the structure of the information as well as the tools used to produce and work with it.

My role

I contribute to the technical components of this modernisation in coordination with IRD and the IOTC Secretariat. My work covers the ROS data model, PostgreSQL structures, validation rules, migration, metadata and technical documentation.

Interoperability with ObServe and other observer-data systems is part of this work. Development uses Java, R and SQL according to the needs of the different components.

Areas of work

  • Describing data and their relationships.
  • Formalising quality and validation rules.
  • Preparing migrations and preserving traceability.
  • Connecting systems through documented formats and interfaces.

Tools that make the rules explicit

A shared model is not enough if its rules remain implicit. Checks, examples and documentation should help teams understand what is expected and identify data that need correction.
