Collecting observations beyond the network

Onboard a vessel, a data collection application must account for a demanding environment. Data entry needs to remain usable offline, and observations must subsequently reach the central system. ObServe supports the recording of fishing operations and the management of scientific observations.

My role

I designed and developed the application, its data entry mechanisms and exchange interfaces. The work includes integration with IRD’s information system, data synchronisation, validation and the platform’s long-term evolution.

This collaboration began in 2009 and continued through maintenance, functional evolution and modernisation. Understanding users’ needs and maintaining coherent data remain central to that work.

What the project brings together

  • An application adapted to field observations.
  • Exchanges with a central database and existing tools.
  • Validation and synchronisation mechanisms.
  • A Java architecture with PostgreSQL and H2 databases.

Connecting fieldwork and information systems

The challenge extends beyond data entry: observations must retain their meaning as they move between tools. Exchange formats, validation rules and documentation contribute to that continuity alongside the code.
